How to Add llms.txt to WordPress

llms.txt is a short Markdown file at your site’s root (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that tells AI assistants what your site is about and which pages matter most. It’s a proposed standard (llmstxt.org) rather than a ranking guarantee, but on WordPress it’s quick to add. Pick the method that matches how you run your site.

Option 1: Use your SEO plugin

Some SEO plugins can now generate llms.txt for you, so check your plugin’s settings first and search them for “llms.txt”. Features change between versions, so if you don’t see it, update the plugin or use one of the options below. A generated file is a good start, but read it afterwards: automatic lists often include pages you’d rather not highlight.

Option 2: Upload the file yourself

If you have access to your hosting, this gives you full control.

  1. Write a file named llms.txt:
# Your Site Name

> One or two sentences on what the site offers and who it's for.

## Key pages
- [Services](https://yoursite.com/services/): what we do
- [Pricing](https://yoursite.com/pricing/): plans and costs
- [Contact](https://yoursite.com/contact/): how to reach us

## Optional
- [Blog](https://yoursite.com/blog/): guides and news
  1. Open your host’s file manager, or connect over SFTP.
  2. Upload llms.txt into the WordPress root folder, the same folder that holds wp-config.php (often public_html).

Option 3: WordPress.com and managed hosts

On plans without file access you can’t upload to the root. Use a plugin that serves llms.txt (if your plan allows plugins), or ask your host’s support whether they can place the file for you.

Check that it works

Open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a private browser window. If you see a 404, a caching or security plugin may be in the way, so clear the cache and try again. Then run the site through our free AI-friendly checker to confirm the file is found and to spot other gaps, like missing structured data or robots.txt rules that block AI crawlers.

Keep it short and current

List only the pages you’d want an assistant to cite, and update the file when major pages change. Dead links in llms.txt do more harm than good.
