How to Add llms.txt to Shopify
llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your site (yourstore.com/llms.txt) that gives AI assistants a short, clean summary of who you are and which pages matter most. It is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org), not a guarantee of ranking, but it costs nothing and takes about ten minutes.
The catch on Shopify
Shopify doesn’t let you upload files to your store’s root folder, so you can’t simply drop llms.txt there. The usual workaround is to host the file in Shopify’s Files area and redirect /llms.txt to it.
Step 1: Write the file
Create a text file named llms.txt. A minimal example:
# Your Store Name
> One or two sentences on what you sell and who it's for.
## Key pages
- [Best sellers](https://yourstore.com/collections/best-sellers): our most popular products
- [Shipping policy](https://yourstore.com/policies/shipping-policy): delivery times and costs
- [About us](https://yourstore.com/pages/about): our story
## Optional
- [Blog](https://yourstore.com/blogs/news): guides and updates
Keep it short. List the pages you’d want an assistant to cite, with a plain description of each.
Step 2: Upload it to Shopify Files
In your Shopify admin, open Content → Files, upload llms.txt, and copy the file URL Shopify gives you (it will be on a cdn.shopify.com address).
Step 3: Redirect /llms.txt to the file
Open Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects (in some admins this sits under Content → Menus), and create a redirect:
- Redirect from:
/llms.txt - Redirect to: the file URL you copied
Save, then visit yourstore.com/llms.txt in a private browser window to confirm it loads.
Step 4: Check it
A redirect works for people and most crawlers, but some tools expect the file to be served directly. Run your store through our free AI-friendly checker to confirm llms.txt is found and to see what else (structured data, robots.txt rules for AI crawlers) is missing.
Keep it current
Update the file when you add a major collection or policy page. An outdated llms.txt that points to dead links is worse than none.
